Phuket game fishing
Phuket Island is one
of the best tropical holiday destinations for the whole family, and is
the home to some terrific saltwater fishing. The islands of Racha are located just 15 miles from
Phuket and provide great fishing for anglers wishing to target Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, Giant Trevally and Wahoo.
For an introduction to the thrilling experience of big–game fishing, Phuket is the ideal opportunity.
Located in the sparkling blue waters of the Andaman Sea just 70
minutes Flying time south of Bangkok, Thailand's most popular beach destination has everything
you could possibly want on a holiday: beautiful beaches, some of the finest resort hotels,
water sports, world class golf courses, exquisite seafood, international and Thai Cuisine,
mountains, Rain forests, temples, coral reefs, turquoise seas and tropical sunshine, not to mention the superb fishing!
– all in plentiful proportions. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to enjoy a romantic
retreat or an action packed time with plenty of colorful nightlife, Phuket has it all.
Racha Islands
The
islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi are located just 12-20 miles from Phuket, and
provide great fishing for anglers wishing to target Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, Giant
Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda and Wahoo. On the crossing to the Racha Islands, and for the duration
of the morning period, we troll for the above species, and occasionally south of the islands Black
Marlin can be encountered, and therefore a concentrated effort will be made to hook one!
Sailfish are present year round, and the best time
to target them is during the afternoon. Trolling Tuna belly–strips close to the
islands can produce multiple strikes and has got to be one of the most exhilarating
experiences in the world of angling! Most days, Sailfish can be spotted
tail–walking and jumping in large numbers close by the islands. When this happens, it’s a case of
steering the boat in their direction in an effort to put the lures right over the top
of them. Then it’s a case of get ready, and hope that the strikes come!
At certain areas at Racha, popper–casting can be an option for Giant Trevally and Dogtooth Tuna.
Also for the more adventurous angler, fly–fishing can produce results also for Giant Trevally and teaser raised
Sailfish. Please bring along your own fly–fishing equipment should you want to try this method.
The trip starts with a
7:00 AM pick–up from your Phuket hotel, or
Phuket International Airport to the departure
pier in Chalong bay. All of your meals are
included on the trip (Sashimi is a crew
specialty not to be missed!), along with fresh fruit, snacks, soft drinks, tea/coffee and
drinking water. The necessary fishing equipment and bait is provided including lures, poppers
etc, along with an unrivaled crew and English, Thai speaking Captain. Should you want to
snorkel around the amazing, coral reefs around Racha, we provide masks and
fins. You are welcome to take back to your hotel any table fish that you catch where
the restaurant staff will be more than happy to cook it for you for a reasonable charge.
Please note we operate a catch and release policy for all Marlin, Sailfish and Sharks.
Not included on the trip
are; crew gratitude and alcoholic drinks. (We
can however arrange to provide alcoholic drinks
on request at cost price). Domestic and
international airfares.
On a live-aboard trip to the Racha Islands, night fishing produces
Groupers, Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally, Barracuda, Snappers and various species of Shark. Live–aboard trips also put you
straight on the fish first thing in the morning when the Sailfish are also active.
During the period November to May we also offers day trips (only from vessel Reel Nauti)
to the many Bamboo F.A.D. (fish aggregation devices) 20-25 south of Similan islands with departure from Phuket.
The fishing around these F.A.D.’s is normally very good for Dorado, Rainbow runners and Wahoo.

action. The drop-off is also the haunt of Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna – though rarely trophy size.
Wahoo, Barracuda, Rainbow runners and Dorado are other species often caught here. The Skipjacks action is normally
very good all year here. Sailfish do show up occasionally but seldom in great numbers.

Seasons: Compared to
many other gamefishing destination worldwide,
Phuket is fortunate, as “extreme” weather and
sea conditions are uncommon. Very few fishing
days are lost due to heavy seas or tropical
storms. Phuket has two major weather
patterns. The “dry” season is generally from mid
October – mid May. During this period, the winds are from the north east and on
occasions sea conditions are normally good. During the “rainy” season – June –
October, the winds are from the south west and this sometimes results in long waves
and gentle swells. The peak season for fishing off Phuket generally coincides
with the peak period for tourists visiting the island. October, November and December usually represent the most
productive months for Marlin and Sailfish action. During the rainy season, Phuket often enjoys a good run
of Sailfish – July, August and September regularly provde top action for Sailfish and Wahoo.
We support Catch and release of all Billfish and sharks. The
fished showed dead on our photos has died from being tail wrapped or from exhaustion.
